and now from washington's leading news station, this is news4 at 6:00. story continues to unfold in the resignation of general david petraeus. new details tonight about a second woman that led to the fbi investigation. veterans day commemorations across the country. how thousands in our area honored members of the armed forces today. and good evening, everyone. i'm jim rosenfield. there were events all over the d.c. area today to honor our war heroes. the president began the day laying a wreath at the tomb of the unknown solder in arlington. he thanked all military members for their service and said their contributions would not be forgotten. derek ward has a look at some of the other ways the area paid tribute to our veterans today.

>> reporter: wheelchairs lined up with military precision awaiting this morning muster, a solemn wreath laying ceremony at the wreath laying ceremony on a day we pause to give them thanks. >> i really appreciate them doing this for us. >> on behalf of the boy scouts of america, i present this flag. >> reporter: older veterans would like be proud of this scouts biking to all the veterans memorial sites offer their gifts of gratitude. of course, one of the stops was here at the african-american civil war veterans memorial where there is an observance today with historical overtones but brings it back around to the present. >> history is always with us every day because many, many people out there i'm sure as i do have personal family members. >> in graiters burg an observance with a hometown feel. >> they came home to our country

and they made our country a better place. which is why we owe them our greatest thanks. >> reporter: more than a few chose to forgo the pageantry and pomp to remember those who didn't come home. few memorials are more sobering than the wall, the vietnam veterans memorial. no matter where they served, they've earned our gratitude through their service for what they went through in the theater of war. >> it was very moving experience. >> reporter: derek ward, news4. new york city paid tribute to the nation's veterans today as well. a wreath laying ceremony was held at the eternal life monument this morning. afterwards thousands of people lined fifth avenue for the annual veterans day parade. parade organizers used the event as an opportunity to support the victims of sandy. the united war veterans council collected winter coats for people affected by the storm. we're learning more about the events that led to the resignation of cia director general david petraeus. it began with an fbi investigation of harassing

e-mails from petraeus' biographer paula broadwell. those e-mails were sent to 37-year-old joe kelly, a state department liaison and friend of general petraeus. sources say the fbi stumbled onto the affair between petraeus and broadwell during that investigation and according to a former petraeus staffer who spoke to the general today, the affair began after he became cia director and ended about four months ago. brian moore is covering this developing story tonight from capitol hill. >> reporter: as president obama saluted vets transin arlington investigation cemetery. >> to thank you, to honor you. >> reporter: washington was consumed with the thought of one of the nation's most celebrated military heroes, cia director and former general david petraeus stepped down over an extramarital affair. >> it was like a lightning bolt.

>> reporter: nbc news reports personal e-mails between petraeus and biographer paula broadwell came to light after an anonymous maims were sent to another woman who worked for the state department. >> mrs. broadwell sent these threatening e-mails to her, and she was frightened, and she went to the fbi. i can't believe it, but that's what it is. >> reporter: the general is not under investigation but his departure leaves a void just as congress is beginning hearings into the deadly september attack and the u.s. diplomatic mission in benghazi, libya. nbc news has confirmed petraeus conducted his own investigation on the ground. >> i don't see how in the world you can find out what happened in benghazi before, during, and after the attack if general petraeus doesn't testify. >> reporter: still trusted by many in washington, petraeus is in a unique position to shed light on benghazi. even as he rides out a controversy of his own.

top lawmakers here are demanding more information on that investigation and why they weren't briefed on it until the general resigned. brian moore, nbc news, washington. >> for now acting cia director michael morell is set to testify about the benghazi attack on capitol hill, but on "meet the press" this morning "washington post's" bob woodward talked about the possibility of general petraeus still being called to testify. >> it is not going away and the question will be, i suspect, will he be asked to testify as a private citizen either in closed door, probably only petraeus -- if he has the ability to stop this benghazi frenzy. >> congressional hearings on benghazi are set for thursday. sunny, nice day today, warm out there, but some rain could be on the way. storm team 4 meteorologist chuck bell is here to tell us what we can expect. >> good evening, everybody.

what a wonderful day to be outside today. sunshine from start to finish, and we made it to 71 degrees at national airport. a clear sky still overhead and your sunday evening is going to be a very pleasant one. current temperatures are still in the mild low 60s across most of the immediate metro area. 57 now for gaithersburg, some of the cool spots. clear and relatively mild by november standards. temperatures staying at or above 60 degrees through 7:00. mid-50s by 9:00 as we cool down a touch and a couple clouds headed our way as we get closer to the midnight hour. mild for your monday but there's some cold air coming, and it may even be some heavy rain as the cold front is coming in our direction. we'll talk about the timing of that and how much cooler it's going to be and when coming up. jim? >> chuck, see you in a bit. we now know the names of the two people killed yesterday after an accident involving a motorcycle and a pedestrian. police say jonathan evans of lorton was driving the motorcycle that hit and killed

harry lee of clifton, maryland, as he was crossing the street. evans also died as a result of the crash. police said lee was not in the crosswalk at the time of the accident. this all happened yesterday afternoon along branch avenue and the crash remains under investigation. we now know the names of the two people killed yesterday after an accident involving a motorcycle and a pedestrian, of course we just told you that. let's move on to police in howard county looking for a suspect in a shooting a the a fast food restaurant. the investigators say the store manager was shot multiple times at the taco bell on minstrel way in columbia. he was flown to the university of maryland shock trauma center, remains in critical condition. the manager's name is not being released. an investigation into a massive explosion in indiana. what police believe may be to blame for the explosion that leveled homes and killed two people. small signs of improvement in the northeast tonight as some areas see transportation returning. and d.c. united fans celebrate here at home while the team kicks off the first leg of

signs of progress today in the area's hardest hit by superstorm sandy. starting tomorrow commuter train service will resume between newark and 33rd street and manhattan. governor chris christie and andrew cuomo also announced new

ferry service that will replace trains and lines still damaged and flooded until they're back up and running. two people are dead after a massive house explosion in indianapolis. the powerful blast happened late last night. could be felt for miles. at least three dozen homes were damaged or destroyed. the entire subdivision was evacuated and the power was turned off as well. about 200 people now staying in a nearby school set up as a shelter. still not clear what sparked the explosion, but a gas leak is expected. police continue to investigate. several anti-government groups in syria are teaming up to form a new coalition tonight. this as fighting continued today all across that country. the move comes after intense international pressure to form a more united front to fight president bashar al assad's regime. the new coalition has elected a president, vice presidents and a security general. leaders are hoping this move will help draw in more international support as well as resources. a nato service member killed today in an insider attack in

afghanistan. afghan officials say an attacker wearing an afghan army uniform shot and killed a member of the u.s.-led coalition forces. the soldier's identity and nationality have not been disclosed. at least 57 soldiers have been killed in so-called insider attacks this year. nato is preparing to withdraw most combat troops by the end of 2014. a major snowstorm slamming canada. residents digging out after several feet of snow, and more could be on the way. a lot nicer in our area. sunny and warm today, but it is i we -- is winter weather on the way here? chuck bell will have your

dc united! >> soccer fans came out to spend their sunday cheering for dc united. this afternoon they took on the houston dine mynamo. big crowd packed the irish whiskey bar. the team's first trip to the eastern conference final since 2006, and i think fans are just a little bit excited. >> if you look around at this crowd right now, the city is ready to go. the boys are ready to go. we're looking for a win. we cup to stay in d.c. >> we have the best team and they deserve to win tonight. they deserve the cup. i wish i could be at the game live, but since i can't, i'm here with the best supporters

ever. >> it sounds like they are at the game. the two teams square off again next weekend. the team that scores the most goals beten the two games moves to the championship. to the weather now, big dose of winter being handed to our neighbors to the north. heavy snow has been falling across parts of canada for days. today's residents in manitoba and ontario getting hit with snow and freezing rain. up to a foot of snow expected to fall in some parts of western canada by the end of the weekend. why am i telling people this? that's your job? >> winter comes early and stays late in canada, doesn't it? >> is some of that cold air coming here? >> absolutely right. our mild air now is being forced up the eastern seaboard by the big push of the cold air going south from canada into the middle of the country. yesterday lincoln, nebraska, 78 degrees. they were below freezing by this morning. they fell 51 degrees in 12 hours out across eastern nebraska yesterday, and we have a dramatic change in the

temperatures coming right here to washington as well. it just won't be quite that dramatic. it will not be a 51-degree drop around here. wow, what a day outside today. veterans day in the nation's capital and everybody was able to go out and take 100% full advantage of it tossing footballs, hitting golf balls, watching the ducks just swim around in the pond. what a great day to be outside today. i hope you took full advantage of it because unfortunately it is not going to last all that much longer. so there it is. there's the money shot of the washington monument on a veterans day. 25 years ago today we had 11 1/2 inches of snow on november the 11th. so quite a turnaround for today. 71 our high temperature. today was the mildest day in the last two weeks, but the cooldown is coming and it arrives about 36 hours from now. still 62 mild degrees and you clear sky in washington. southerly breezes at 6 miles per

hour. that southerly wind is going to continue for the rest of tonight and through tomorrow as well. that will keep the mild air in place around here for about the next 24 hours or so. eventually though that colder air across canada and the midwest, that's coming our way. tomorrow will be another mild day though, but it won't be quite so pretty as today. we will start out with some breaks of sunshine in the morning but clouds are totally going to win the day. and by lunchtime and thereafter it will still be milds but a lot of clouds around. it will feel a lot more moist. won't be quite the nice day as it was. there's the weather front across parts of the midwest. wind advisories out ahead of it. and behind it rain changing over to freezing rain and snow across parts of iowa and also into parts of wisconsin. chicago, 70 degrees for a high in chicago today. tomorrow their high temperature will be 35 degrees? so again, not quite that 50 degree drop and as the cold front comes further and further east, it moderates just a touch so it will be a mild night

tonight, clouds on the increase. enjoy a little sun early in the morning tomorrow because it won't last all day. eventually the weather front coming our way by about midnight tomorrow night going into tuesday morning. that's when the rain drops arrive in the washington area. falling drops and falling temperatures as we go through the day. high temperature on tuesday is probably going to occur before you get up. temperatures back down into the chilly 30s by sundown i think or shortly thereafter. the rest of the evening, partly cloudy and quite mild. overnight lows tonight holding in the upper 40s and low 50s. and then tomorrow a little bit of sun early on, but then becoming a fairly cloudy day and rain drops possible mainly after sunset out towards the blue ridge. our rain drop chances here in town really arrive after about 11:00 midnight time frame and there's the seven-day forecast. enjoy it, everybody. highs in the 40s on wednesday, so, again, not a 50-degree drop in 12 hours but nonetheless, breezy and chilly feeling, especially compared to how nice it was outside today. >> was today a record? >> not even close. >> i didn't think so because you

in the game. deleon, take another look here. this game got out of hand in a hurry. the dynamo is on top. they win this one by a final score of 3-1. we're going to move down to the college level now. acc championship, top seeded maryland taking on second seeded north carolina. pick it up in the tenth minute. the corner kick, bounces off the freshman dakota edwards. there it is in the back of the net. edwards first career goal. take another look. some nifty footwork there by the freshman. turks take a 1-0 lead. second half now off the throw in. making things happen. the shot deflects off the defender into the goal. watch this one again. ball goes off the sliding defender's foot. terps up 2-0. north carolina did add a late goal but it wasn't enough. maryland wins their third acc title in the last five years. 2-1 the final score. next up for the terps, the ncaa

tournament. the redskins are off on a bye week but there's plenty of action around the league. a must-win game for both the cowboys and the eagles. right now the eagles lead that game 14-10 in the third quarter. we start things off with the division leading giants. the g men in cincinnati taking on the bengals. first quarter action. we're scoreless. andy dalton off the play-action. he's going to throw this one deep and find a.j. green. he's so wide open, he had to wait for the football. 56-yard touchdown. bengals take a 7-0 lead. in the third quarter now, cincy up 17-6. eli manning trying to get new york back in this ball game, but he tries too hard. cincinnati with the interception. one of three turnovers for the day for eli. the bengals in the red zone. dalton finds gresham. bengals win 31-13.

ravens hosting the raiders. we jump ahead to the second quarter. ravens up 20-3 already. carson palmer finds hayward. he shakes a hit from ed reid and he's taking it all the way to the end zone. 55-yard touchdown. raiders within 10. but this one wasn't even close. third quarter, ravens up 27-10. joe flacco, he's going to air one out to another terp, torrey smith there for the grab. one of two touchdowns on the day for smith. later in the third, this game really out of control now, 41-17. baltimore fakes a field goal. sam cook, the punter, takes it in from quofour yards out. a franchise record for points scored, they win big, 55-20. let's head to new orleans. saints hosting the undefeated falcons. they're joining in on the nfl salute to service for this
